A Magic: The Gathering (MTG) Jumpstart tournament is a casual, fast-paced format ideal for newer players or anyone looking for a low-stress way to play Magic. Here's how it works:
What is Jumpstart?
Jumpstart is a unique MTG format where players don't build a deck from scratch. Instead, they choose (or are randomly assigned) two themed 20-card booster packs, shuffle them together, and play. Each pack is centered around a specific theme like "Vampires," "Lightning," or "Unicorns."
Tournament Structure
A typical Jumpstart tournament goes something like this:
-
Sign-Up and Deck Creation:
-
Each player receives (or chooses) two Jumpstart boosters.
-
They open the packs, shuffle the 40 cards together (no card swapping allowed), and that’s their deck.
-
The lands are included in the packs, so no need to bring extras.
-
-
Rounds:
-
The tournament uses a Swiss-style format with 3–4 rounds
-
Why Jumpstart?
-
No deckbuilding required – just shuffle and play.
-
Great for new or returning players.
-
Fun and often surprising combinations – you might get “Goblin Cats” or “Unicorn Pirates.”
